Anonymous asked: I want to become one of Allah's favorite people. Do you think this is possible, and is it strange to have such a thought?
The Qur’an and Sunnah explains what God loves, in considerable detail, actually:
"God loves those who are conscious of Him." [3:76]
God goes into considerable detail on this topic:
“True piety does not consist in turning your faces towards the east or the west - but truly pious is he who believes in God, and the Last Day; and the angels, and revelation, and the prophets; and spends his substance - however much he himself may cherish it - upon his near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and the beggars, and for the freeing of human beings from bondage; and is constant in prayer, and renders the purifying dues; and [truly pious are] they who keep their promises whenever they promise, and are patient in misfortune and hardship and in time of peril: it is they that have proved themselves true, and it is they, they who are conscious of God.” [2:177]
God reaffirms this position throughout The Qur’an:
"God loves the doers of good." [2:195]
"O you who have attained to faith! Be ever steadfast in your devotion to God, bearing witness to the truth in all equity; and never let hatred of anyone lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Be just: this is closest to being God-conscious. And remain conscious of God: verily, God is aware of all that you do." [5:8]
"God loves the doers of good" [3:134]
God then mentions many other characteristics that He values, like those who put their trust in Him:
"God loves those who place their trust in Him." [3:159]
Those who are patient:
"God loves those who are patient in adversity" [3:146]
Those who repent:
"God loves those who turn unto Him in repentance" [2:222]
Those who purify themselves:
“God loves all who purify themselves” [9:108]
The Prophet reported other valued characteristics, such as kindness:
"God is kind and He loves kindness" [Muslim]
Expanding, The Prophet is reported to have said on kindness:
"God, the Blessed and Exalted is kind and loves kindness. He is pleased with it and helps you with it as long as it is not misplaced." [Muwatta]
This should be our starting point and our goal, to attain these virtues, and the many others that are enumerated in The Qur’an and Sunnah, so that we may seek God’s favor.
It is worth noting that God’s pleasure is found in being good to others, it seems that is an aspect of our religion we have—regrettably—lost sight of the most.
I love how behind every single window, there is a different person who has a story that we know nothing about and I sometimes forget that my life isn’t the only life in the world
